In Fall 2019, Resideo began developing a new customer facing mobile app to support their smart home products. As part of the development process, I joined the design and product management team to guide research for the ongoing development of the product.
Create a long-term research strategy for the mobile app
Incorporate research into the iterative design process – test early and often
I led the long-term research strategy for the new mobile app. I also supervised additional researchers, who provided support for specific sub-projects.
As the lead researcher, I adopted a multi-prong approach to providing generative and evaluative research on the app to align with the fast paced development cycles.
Incorporating ongoing research into the design process ensured that usability concerns were found and addressed early in the development cycle, when they were easier to change.
Quick turn-around, low stakes testing also meant that we were able to experiment with new and innovative ways of designing the mobile app.
As a collaborator in the design processes, my goal was to represent the users' perspective and to provide the design and product teams usable tools to facilitate the development of the app. On a regular basis, I created and shared the following:
Weekly user testing reports
Biweekly competitive analysis & app teardown analysis documents
Assets like card sort feedback, heuristic evaluations, and surveys
Highlight reel videos
A challenge of this project was incorporating myself remotely into a design team located in Austin, TX.
I addressed this challenge by spending time establishing rapport with the design team through a shared research slack channel, impromptu chats, and weekly research meetings.
